  • Wide doors so that a person using walker, or a wheelchair can pass through without any trouble
  • The way through entrance should be without any hurdles
  • Ramps in the doorways wherever necessary
  • Staircases should have strong and sturdy hand railings

Living Spaces





  • Living spaces can be less furnished as there are risk of elder people bumping into congested places and can have falls.
  • The living spaces can have concealed wiring and one should avoid hanging chords around as there is risk of tripping over the cords.
  • Floorings should be clear of mattress and carpets

Do not leave the wires and chords hanging
Do not place rugs/mats/ carpets as there


Bathrooms




  • The passageway to bathroom should be clear of obstacles
  • Antiskid mats can be laid on bathroom floorings.
  • Handrails can be installed near toilet seat and in shower places




  • The house should be well illuminated.
  • The curtains of house should be light coloured so that it does not darken the room completely.
  • Skirting lights can be installed in the passageways and staircases so that flooring and stairs are visible in dark.
  • Installing night lamps in the passageways
  • One can start practice of keeping handy torch near bed as it can be helpful to get out of bed in dark.

Bedrooms




  • The bed railings can be fixed to the bed to prevent falls during sleep and to provide support while getting up from bed.
