Health Schemes for Elderly

Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

AB-PMJAY is a national health insurance scheme aimed at providing free access to healthcare for low-income earners in India including the elderly. It offers coverage for secondary and tertiary hospitalization across public and private empanelled hospitals.

Beneficiaries: Families below the poverty line, including senior citizens

Benefits:

  • Provides health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.
  • PM-JAY provides cashless access to health care services for the beneficiary at the point of service, that is, the hospital.
  • All pre-existing conditions are covered from day one.
  • Benefits of the scheme are portable across the country, i.e., a beneficiary can visit any empanelled public or private hospital in India to avail cashless treatment.
  • Services include approximately 1,929 procedures covering all the costs related to treatment, including but not limited to:
  • Drugs, supplies, diagnostic services, physician's fees, room charges, surgeon charges, OT and ICU charges, etc.
  • Medical examination, treatment, and consultation
  • Pre-hospitalization
  • Medicine and medical consumables
  • Non-intensive and intensive care services
  • Diagnostic and laboratory investigations
  • Medical implantation services (where necessary)
  • Accommodation benefits
  • Complications arising during treatment
  • Post-hospitalization follow-up care up to 15 days

Ayushman Vay Vandana Card

The card offers treatment for around 2000 medical procedures and covers all pre -existing diseases from first day itself without any waiting period. Senior citizens aged 70 or above who are eligible for the Ayushman Vay Vandana Card.

Beneficiaries: Senior citizens (70 years and above)

Benefits:

  • Affordable Healthcare: Helps senior citizens manage the rising costs of medical care
  • No Documentation Hassles: The card simplifies the process of availing medical services.
  • Eligible individuals can use the Ayushman card to avail of cashless healthcare benefits up to INR 5 lakhs per family per year at empanelled hospitals and healthcare providers across the country.

Assistive Devices Schemes for Elderly

Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY)

A scheme that provides free physical aids and assistive devices to senior citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families to help them overcome age-related disabilities and lead a dignified life. This implies those who are aged above 60 years will get free assisted living aids and physical devices which are required for their sustainability. The main criteria for the senior citizens to get full benefits of Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY) scheme is that they must belong to BPL family and should hold valid BPL card issued by the concerned authority.

Beneficiaries: Senior citizens aged 60 and above from BPL families who suffer from age-related disabilities like low vision, hearing impairment, or mobility issues.

Benefits:Free distribution of assistive devices such as:

  • Walking sticks
  • Spectacles
  • Hearing aids
  • Wheelchairs
  • Artificial dentures
  • Elbow crutches
  • Tripods/quadpods
  • Free of cost distribution of the devices, commensurate with the extent of disability/infirmity that is manifested among the eligible senior citizens.
  • In case of multiple disabilities/infirmities manifested in the same person, the assistive devices will be given in respect of each disability/impairment.
  • Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation (ALIMCO) will undertake one year free maintenance of the aids & assisted living devices.

  • Age proof (birth certificate, school leaving certificate, or voter ID)
  • BPL certificate
  • Medical certificate indicating the need for assistive devices
