The Department of History was established in the Savitribai Phule Pune University in 1969.
Earlier, it was located in the Deccan College, but at that time, a separate
Department was set up in the University of Pune for the study of Medieval
and Modern Indian history, while Archaeology and Ancient Indian History
remained with the Deccan College. Dr. A.R. Kulkarni, now Professor Emeritus,
was the first Head of the new Department, which remained a very small one
for many years.
Today, the Department runs M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. A semester and
credit pattern is followed at the M.A. level. In addition to the Department
itself, there are fifteen other postgraduate centres located in various
colleges affiliated to the University of Pune, but the M.Phil course is
conducted only by the Department. The Department also runs a Certificate
Course in Modi Script.
