Welcome to Department of Geology

Founded in 1955 the Department of Geology was fully established in the august campus of the then University of Pune during 1971. Presently with an intake capacity of 25, the Department runs the credit based course of M Sc Geology having several optional credits added time and again updating the syllabus. Twelve full time faculty members with expertise in classical, applied and emerging fields of geosciences run the course. The Department is well equipped with basic as well as advanced facilities including a sophisticated thin section and polishing lab (Buehler equipments), several optical microscopes (Nikon, Leica, Zeiss), XRF (Panalytical), ICPE (Shimadzu), XRD (Rigaku), AAS (Varian), HPIC, Microwave digestion, Millipore and the Palaeomagnetic equipments. The Department is recognized and funded by the national programs of DST-FIST (Phase II) and UGC SAP-DRS2, UPE, ISRO including some funds from ONGC. The Department has a unique and rare collection of rocks, minerals and fossils in its museum and the departmental library is listing over 1000 text books, reference books, memoirs and records of GSI and other research journals. The Central (Jayakar) library further houses a large collection of books, journals, e-journals and e-books and many other documentation facility accessible through Wi-Fi to faculty and students. The Department has produced vast alumni of renowned researchers, scholars, administrators, academicians and eminent geologists affiliated with prestigious organizations and Universities in India and abroad. It has contributed more than 112 Ph.D.’s and many books, monographs and research publications in specialised and emerging fields of Earth Sciences.

The placement cell organizes the internship programs and employments. Reputed oil companies like Schlumberger, Weatherford, Petrolink Data Services, many geotechnical and mining companies and government organizations have regularly recruited fresh students from this department.

With a mandate of advancement in teaching and research, the Department of Geology is continuously upgrading its facility through enrichment programs of the University, UGC and Industry developing new laboratories and courses to emerge as one of the best in country. It is committed to produce future geologists with acumen for socio-economic development of the nation. A combination of young and experienced faculty with advanced teaching, learning, library and laboratory facilities in the campus and linkages to industry makes the graduation in the Department an exceptional experience.
