Welcome to Department of Electronic and Instrumentation Science

Department of Electronic and Instrumentation Science is an integral part of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. It produces post-graduates and doctorates of excellent calibre. The well-equipped laboratories and faculties with academic leadership forms the backbone of the department, contributing significantly to the practical skills of the students. The department offers courses, which are industrial as well as research-oriented. Department of Electronic Science and Department of Instrumentation Science were functioning as a separate campus departments till June 2021. On 22nd June 2021 both the departments were merged together and named as “Department of Electronic and Instrumentation Science”.
Department of Electronic Science was established in the year 1984 with the mandate to generate trained young manpower in the field of semiconductor science & technology and bridge the gap between educational institution and industries.
Before 1990, University Science Instrumentation Centre (USIC) was working as a separate unit which support development, repair and maintenance of scientific instruments on the university campus. Later on academic program related to Applied Physics for graduate students was started which was eventually converted into master level program in Instrumentation science..
Department of Instrumentation Science was established in the year 1990 with the mandate to generate trained manpower in the field of Instrumentation that will cater to requirements in process industries, automation industries, manufacturing industries, robotics & automation, power plants, etc.

The department also offers Ph.D. in areas related to Embedded Systems, IoT, RF design and Communication, Material Science, Sensors, Instrumentation and Control. The department has well-established, industry-standard, state-of-the-art laboratories catering to teaching and research. The main objective of the department is to logically translate proven research ideas into reliable and effective, but simple, elegant, and handy instruments and gadgets. This facilitates the development of high-tech products in diverse fields and the teaching of advanced techniques in frontline research.
The government of India announced the National Education Policy-2020 in July 2020. Under these guidelines, the department has reframed the structure and syllabus for M.Sc. courses in July 2023.
