It is perhaps the only department in India, which offers under one roof all the major specializations in Human Institute of Indian Geographer', popularly known as IIG is a professional body devoted to research and development in the field of Geography. The institute was established in Feb.1979. It was the combined efforts of the faculty of the Department of Geography, University of Pune that such as organization could be established. The aim of the institute is to make available a platform for researchers to exchange their research findings and facilitate young geographers to get an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas in the field.

The Institute has been organizing annual conferences at various university centres in different parts of the country. These conferences are well attended not only by geographers but also by scientists from allied disciplines. The institute publishes a biannual journal named 'Transactions'. Besides publication of 'Transactions' the institute has published a few books mostly in the form of collection of key note addresses delivered by different scholars at the annual conferences. Presently it has more than 500 life members actively participating in the functioning of the institute.
