About Department

Located in the lush green campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly University of Pune), the Department of English is one of the foremost research centers in Western India, and is recognized internationally for its research and teaching. Constantly striving towards the enrichment and enhancement of students, the Department attracts a large number of international students every year from countries such as Iran, Iraq, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, Turkmenistan, Thailand and China, among others. Floating a large number of innovative elective courses in language and literature, the Department endeavors to provide not only an in depth aesthetic and critical knowledge to students, but also to keep them well versed in the current state of research in literary studies. Courses as diverse as Contemporary Shakespeare Studies, Modern European Literature in English Translation, LGBT Studies, Translation Studies, History of the Book, Film Studies, among others, provide a glimpse to the largely interdisciplinary focus of the Department. Located around 200km from Mumbai, Pune is very well connected by rail, road and air.
