Haemoglobin Checkup - A Success Story

Lasalgaon college is located in a small Grampalika village Which was Established in 1967 by the visionaries of the village when there were on Facilities of higher education in small villages. Majority of the students come from villages and hutments with very poor economical and educational background. The college has the motto of "Seva Dhyan and Shradha". This is amply reflected in the activities of the college. The National Service Scheme ( N.S.S. ) unit in the college was set up in the year 1970. The unit stands unique in the University so far as innovative are concerned.

The present story has its origin way back in 2004. When a Special Campwasorganised in a very small village Dongargaon, Tal. Niphad of district Nashik. In the camp, as an innovative practice of the unit Hemoglobin ( H b ) check-up activity was conducted for women of the village. The girl students participating in the camp were also checked for and the programme. The officers were shocked to know that most of the girls were reported anemic. The task of Hb check-up in case of pregnant women in rueal area has been taken up by the Government agencies. However in the case of young generation this task has not taken up by any agency, which is highly require.

This discovery of anaemic status of rural girls inspired the unit to conduct such activity regularly and to do something concrete for the health betterment of girl-student. To begin with programme officers conducted number of meetings with Medical Association of Lasalgaon and discussions revealed that elaborate scheme of haemoglobin check-up and the recovery measures should be taken.

Accordingly, the objective of haemoglobin check-up was determined. The major aim of the programme is to create health awareness amongst the girl students and to develop self-consciousness about health and hygiene and to sensitise them to undertake such programmers on own, so that community is benefited.

In the month of September 2005, on the second day of the month, first haemoglobin check-up was conducted in the College for the first year lady students within age group of 17 to 20 years. One hundred and thirty three girls were checked up with the help of local doctors and pathologists who gave their services free of cost. The outcome of the check up was surprising that 88 % of the girl were in anaemic group and only 12 % were in normal range of haemoglobin.

To overcome this deficiency problem in the girls, consultaion and discussions with physicians and experts in the filed of medical sciences, a recovery programme was chalked out. The first phase was the orientation of concerned anaemic student by the experts followed by ground discussions with programme officers. It was concluded that for improving the Hb content, diet can be alternative solution. Therefore the next phase was creation of diteta awareness among them. For that we suggested to the anaemic student to take the ample amount of iron rich diet i.e. leafy vegetables like methi, spinach, green peas, gram, leaves of drumstick, jiggery , meat, fish, egg, etc. Then for the recovery of Hb, with the assistance of Government Primary Health Centers, medicines were provided to the anemic students. The medicines included Vit. B 12 Folic acid, Ferrous sulphate preparation.

To see the effect of the recovery measures, the second Hb check up programme was held exactly after two months ( 2nd Nov.2005 ). The results were very much encouraging. The number of anemic student ( 88 % ) came down to 78 % , a decrease by 11. 4 % over the pervious anemic strength. Further, it was also observed that general diet and health awareness amongst the girl students also increased substantially.

The third check up was held on 2nd January 2006, month after the previous one. it gave the impressive results. The 78 % anemic strength declined to a surprising percentage of 53 (Fifty three ).In a span of four months the recovery in Hb, dite and health awareness was high enough to give moral boost to our N.S.S. unit.

The feed back from the parent of the girls who were treated was excellent. The parents were grateful to the unit for not only the medical help but also for the change in the attitude towards health not limited to students but also their family members. This innovative programme was conducted by our N.S.S. programme officers Mr. Bhushan Hiray & Mr. Vilas Khairnar under the guidance of Principal.N.S.S. local advisory committee member Dr. Arun Kale & pathogist gave their services free of cost. The success of the story belongs to the team work of the college teachers, administrative staff, government agencies, local medical assocation, pathologists, students, parents and those all who knowingly supported the unit is highly encouraged due to or this success story and we are looking forward for similar more innovative activities.

A Success story of Pimpalgaon Wagha Hagandarimukta Gaon (Open Defecation Free village)

The Pimpalgaon Wagha 16 km. away form the west side of Ahmednagar City and 6km down on the Nagar-Kalyan Highway. Pimpalgaon Wagha is a small village having 924 populations with 157 families. Many projects had been launched through Indo-German Watershed Development. But lack of proper leadership all the projects were stagnated and this small village remained undeveloped.

In the year 2004-05 Zilla Parishad launched 'Gram Swachhata' movement. Along with the Hagandarimukta Gaon Abhiyan took place. Mr. Chandrakant Dalavi, the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad, Ahmednagar has started awaking the villagers for Hagandarimukta Gaon i.e. every home in the village must have toilet. Every employee and officer had adopted a village. Mr. Dalavi adopted 'Pimpalgaon Wagha'. When this news reached through the newspaper, people in Pimpalgaon Wagha were in high spirits. A band of artist presented a programme in he village on 1st November. People become aware of the fact and Mr. Sandeep Wable, Mr.Sahadeo Mhaske and Mr. Machindra Dhage came forward and took oath that unless their village becomes 100% 'Hagandarimukta Gaon' they will not put on sandals on their foot. Villagers welcomed these youth. Three young men started
visiting each and every home and convinced the importance of toilets for hygience.

Soon Mr. Dalvi, the C.E.O of ZP was transferred on promotion and the villagers were disappointed. A grand farewell programme was held under the leadership of Mr.Popatrao Pawar on behalf of 40 NGOs, College NSS in the presence of Mr. Anna Hazare. What about the project was question in everyone's mind. But Mr. Popatrao Pawar threw and open challenge the Prof. R.G. Kolhe, the NSS Programme Officer of the New Arts, Commerce and Science College, Ahmednagar should accept this responsibility. Prof. R.G. Kolhe immediately accepted it and people were happy. On 2nd December 2004 Prof. R.G. Kolhe organized a residential NSS Camp with the permission of University of Pune NSS Office & The
Principal of the College and started his work with the students and villagers under the guidance of total sanitation campaign cell of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti, Ahmednagar.

Total 125 volunteers participated in this camp visited every home and convinced the importance of hygiene and prepared their minds. After two days villagers participated in the project by digging pits under the guidance of Mr. Popatrao Pawar, Sarpanch and Deputy Sarpanch of Pimpalgaon Wagha and Zilla Parishad. During one month i.e. 2nd December to 5th January all the pits for toilets were
dug.

The villagers collected money as their financial ability and purchased bricks, sand, cement and all the necessary material for building up of toilets and they started their work. Mean while all the NSS residential camp were over and students were back to college. But till the work finishes the students of New Arts, Commerce and Science College, Ahmednagar continued visiting the village on Sundays and other holidays along with the Prof. R.G. Kolhe and helped the villagers.

The Programme Officer Prof. R.G. Kolhe participated in the 'Ashadhi March' Pimpalgaon Wagha to Pandharpur and wherever they had the camp discussed was the people the necessity of Hagandarimukta Gaon. The result of the discussion was the restart of the Hagandarimukta movement. At last on 26th January 2005 Ahmednagar Zillha Parishad declared that Pimpalgaon Wagha in Ahmednagar Taluka is the first and only one Hagandarimukta Village and honoured the Sarpanch and Villagers.

Mr. Sandeep Wable, the young man in this village says, "At first people didn't give response to this Hagandarimukta Gaon Project. Changing their mentality was a though job for us. Still we students, who have determined, gave home visits and tried to convince people. But it was all in vein. Many of them started testing and retorting us. Walking without sandals as we took oath not to put them till we become Hagandarimukta Gaon was troublesome. We had footsore and the pains reached to the brain. Let the people realize our pains was our effort but they never responded. And there was the day when Prof. R.G. Kolhe of New Arts, Commerce and Science College, Ahmednagar had a gram sabha (Village meeting) and decided through NSS and with the cooperation of villagers he wished to start Hagandarimukta Gaon project here. Later on we succeeded in changing villagers' minds. People who used to retort and tease us participated in this movement. I thought pains in our foot reached to their brains and we are successful in making our village as a Hagandarimukta Gaon."

Another youth, Mr. Ajay wable says, "Like nearby villagers i.e. Wadgon Amli, Hiware Bazar, Ralegaon Siddhi; our village Pimpalgaon Wagha too become and ideal village. But how can I tell this to the seniors in the villages was a problem. Fortunately, New Arts, Commerce and Science College, Ahmednagar had an NSS Camp in our village. Those students and the villagers worked together and today my village is a Hagandarimukta Gaon. I am very much pleased with this."

The guidance and co-operation of Hagandarimukta Gaon, Pimpalgaon Wagha goes to the Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad, Miss Prajakta Lavangare, Mr. Dilip Rupwate Saheb, Bhujbal Saheb and total sanitation campaign cell of ZP, Gramsevak Mr. Dnyneshwar Mahandule. Dr. S.B. Nimse, Principal of New Arts, Commerce and Science College, Ahmednagar, Vice Principal Prof. U.R. Thube, Prof. Yelwande, Prof. Ambade, NSS P.O., NSS Programme Co-ordinator and University of Pune, youth clubs in the village and all the NSS Volunteers. Their efforts lead the village Pimpalgaon Wagha towards the only Hagandarimukta village in Ahmednagar Taluka and the recipient of Rural Development Ministry, India Government's "Nirmal Gram Award". This village is being felicitated by the President of India. What else joy the villagers and NSS can have? Really,l if villagers and the volunteers of NSS, Programme Officers, Panchayat Samiti and Z.P. come together, the best example what they can do, is the success story of Hagandarimukta Gaon - Pimpalgaon Wagha.
