Assistant Professor | Neuroepigenetics & Molecular Neuroscience Lab
Department of Biotechnology, Savitribai Phule Pune University
Dr. Amul Sakharkar leads a research program focused on identifying the epigenetic signatures of brain disorders. Our lab investigates how environmental factors like alcohol, stress, and physical trauma reshape the chromatin landscape to drive long-term changes in behavior.
With a career spanning elite labs in India and the United States (UIC), Dr. Sakharkar combines behavioral models with cutting-edge molecular tools like ChIP-seq, DNA methylation analysis, and bioinformatics.
New Research Article published in Molecular Neurobiology regarding Histone Arginine Methylation and NPY expression.
Dr. Sakharkar's work on Gut Microbiota and Traumatic Brain Injury (rMTBI) featured in Journal of Neuroscience Research.
Lab receives funding to investigate Epigenetic Remodeling in the Amygdala following adolescent trauma.
Our lab uses a multi-disciplinary approach to solve complex neurological questions:
Mapping how adolescent experiences "program" adult susceptibility to anxiety and addiction via DNA methylation.
Investigating the molecular "scars" left by repeated mild traumatic brain injuries and their link to neurodegeneration.
Exploring how the gut microbiome communicates with the brain's epigenetic machinery during chronic stress.
