Group Description: Diabetes is a serious chronic disease worldwide and is caused by defects in insulin production, insulin secretion, and insulin signalling. It has also been associated with misfolding and aggregation of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP). The nationwide prevalence of diabetes in India now tops 9% and is >13% in the urban adults and has been linked to micronutrient deficiency. Being a complex disorder, there is an imperative need for a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying diabetes to develop more effective therapies. We are currently aiming at identifying miRNAs and metabolic signatures specific to the developed disease models, and Indian diabetic population in an attempt to find/develop novel therapeutic targets for effective Diabetes management.
