Welcome to Department of Library & Information Science

About the Department

The Department of Library Science was established in 1958 as a part of the University Library to conduct a one-year Diploma Course in Librarianship (Dip. Lib.). The course was initiated under the guidance of the University Librarian, Prof. K. S. Ingave, with active participation from eminent local librarians such as Shri R. S. Parkhi, Shri K. H. Borgaonkar (Fergusson College), and Shri J. B. Budhkar (Nowrosjee Wadia College).

In accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, the diploma course was later restructured into a full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science (B.Lib.) in 1965. The introduction of the Master’s Degree Course—comprising both coursework and research—marked a major milestone in the department’s history. This program provided students with essential exposure to research methodology, analytical techniques, and their practical application to library and information problems.

To support working professionals, an additional division of the B.Lib. Sc. course (Evening Batch) was launched in July 1982, enabling librarians in service to upgrade their qualifications.

During the Seventh Five-Year Plan, the UGC made the M.Lib. Sc. degree an essential qualification for college librarians. To meet this growing demand, the department introduced a two-year vocational M.Lib. Sc. course in June 1987. The curriculum mirrored that of the full-time M.Lib. Sc. program.

In line with national policy and UGC directives, a two-year integrated Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) program was introduced in 2002. The department also offers advanced research programs, including M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees, with the doctoral program initiated as early as 1981.

Over the years, the department has organized numerous workshops, seminars, and refresher courses for librarians, fostering continuous professional development and keeping them abreast of current trends in Library and Information Science.
